How To: Defining Your Personal Style

Defining your personal style is not as hard as it sounds. However, when I sit down to a blank journal page or look at an empty canvas, where to begin feels daunting because writing and painting aren’t my areas of expertise. Many of my clients feel this same type of struggle when identifying their personal style. Where I find most people go off course is when they settle for something they had to get at the last minute or couldn’t find anything they liked better. They didn’t have time to pick up their dry cleaning or they needed something at the last minute for a work event etc. While work events might seem like a thing of the past, those unloved pieces we’ve settled for take up valuable space in your closet. They end up confusing your brain and clouding your vision from seeing all the pieces you really love living together at all times. This is why closet cleansing (a service offered through my studio) is such an important tool in defining your own personal style. It usually only takes a few hours and is key to maintaining a functional wardrobe.Once we trim the fat, you can start to get a clearer idea of what you gravitate toward and your “style adjectives,” getting you on track to defining your personal style. I recommend starting with three words and keeping it easy. Maybe your words are, “chic, conservative, elegant.” Or maybe your style is “bold, fun, trendy.” Either way, you need a few cornerstone pieces to maintain consistency throughout your wardrobe. Oftentimes this comes down to accessories. For example, two women with the above style adjectives can wear the exact same dress but make it look unique by how they accessorize and style it.

Where to begin:

1. Start with a handbag that screams you! You’re going to be using your handbag nearly every day. Choose something you are in love with. Also, if you want defined style, try to avoid styles you see on just about everyone on Instagram. Remember all those girls who wore the exact same Gucci belt with every outfit? Talk about blending in! Nothing screams basic like getting a piece that everyone else has. Is your style sporty, youthful, and practical? Check out the Tammy Mini 2. Have a dressed down shoe and a dressed up shoe that are your go-to options. For days when your pedicure isn’t flawless and you don’t have time to think about what to wear, have two great pairs of shoes on hand that scream your style adjectives. I have yet to meet a woman who wouldn’t love these Codie Boots 3. Keep jewelry minimal. I know it sounds crazy, but a ton of jewelry is really just a bunch of noise when it comes to your look. Having a few favorite pieces you repeat and wear regularly looks signature to you. It also sends a more powerful message when pieces look more intentional and less layered and chaotic. If your words are beachy, eclectic, and luxurious, a piece that might suit you is this Pebble Ring 4. When it comes to denim, don’t follow trends. Follow what flatters your figure and make it your signature. For example, I have always looked best in a flare jean because I have a booty and athletic legs. For my body, wearing a flair on the bottom adds proportion to my body type. I’ve worked it into my personal style by getting more creative with my tops and jackets rather than straying too much from denim that doesn’t flatter me. Now bellbottoms have become a “thing” for me regardless of what’s in style. As long as the wash of denim is current, you’re good to go! If your style adjectives are edgy, casual, and cool, try the Nico Jean 5. This may sound antiquated but - wear a watch. There is something very chic about a woman in a signature watch. Even if it’s an Apple Watch, add a cool strap, etc. It’s a grounding piece that creates sophistication. Think about when you see a guy with a great watch… Instantly looks successful, respectable, and stylish… same goes for the gals!If you need more help, you know where to find me
