Alexandria Days: A Tradition Returns
The original Alexandria Days Celebration started way back in 1959. Can you believe that? It was started by a group of local business owners to help stores suffering because of the rise of suburban malls. When this bit of history popped onto Maurisa Potts’ phone last year and she shared it with a group of us, we thought: My, how things don’t change. Malls are dying, but we are still combating the big-box stores of today and, of course, online shopping. And, of course, our town’s leadership still struggles with parking. I would love for the shop owners of the 1950s to see that we still grapple with these same issues almost 70 years later.
It made us laugh that it was the store owners themselves who joined forces and figured out a way to work together to remind everyone that we have the best shopping district in the region. There is no need to go to the malls when we have all you need right here in Old Town.
We decided it was time to bring back Alexandria Days last year, and people loved it so much that we are doing it again.
Join 20 stores in Old Town from September 18 to September 20 and explore all they have to offer. Some stores have trunk shows for the weekend, gifts with purchase, or other activities in store. Click here to find out which stores are participating and what is happening in their stores.
It is a great way to explore new stores or just spend a day strolling the historic streets of Old Town.
