Leather Weather at The Hive

I know it’s cold and we all think about sweater weather when the temperature dips, but what about leather weather?

As I was thinking about what to write for Stylebook, I realized we had been unpacking a lot of leather pieces last month. I can’t quite explain it, but I have a hard time passing up suede and leather—which is probably obvious if you shop at my store. I tend to dress pretty simply and shy away from pattern, so I’m naturally drawn to texture. That’s where my love of leather comes in.

I also tend to bring in more emotional pieces during transition deliveries. If you walk into a store in January or February, something really has to wow you. I can say with confidence that the leather pieces we’re featuring right now are true showstoppers. They’re the kind of pieces you unpack and do two things: first, you gasp a little because they’re so gorgeous, and then you think, wow, these are expensive.

I always get a little nervous putting them out, but then I see them on someone and remember exactly why I chose them. These are the pieces you’d never edit out of your closet—the ones you just had to have and that make you feel special every time you wear them.

I asked Madeline to style some of my favorites: an Ulla Johnson leather top with floral leather detailing, a faux leather skirt from Citizens of Humanity, and a snakeskin-embossed leather piece from TWP. There’s also the perfect leather bomber from TWP. If you’ve ever wanted to invest in a leather jacket, this is the one. It’s the perfect shade of brown with the softest leather—it almost feels like it’s been worn for years, which is exactly what you want in a leather jacket.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
