Thomas and Davis: A Guide for On and Off the Ski Slopes

Winter Lovers: I love skiing Timberline Mountain and Canaan Valley in West Virginia! Canaan offers such beautiful natural scenery around its trails, and Timberline Mountain tends to keep snow on its slopes when other resorts in the area have closed, thanks to heavy base building.

Insider Tips for Parents and Cool Aunties:

  • If you will be skiing all season in the local area, talk to Ski Barn about a season-long rental for your kids. It saves time and the hassle of going through rental lines each visit, and it’s cheaper than buying skis for children whose foot and ski sizes change frequently.

  • Also, did you know that many ski lessons at Canaan Valley include a lift ticket and rentals? It’s a great deal for parents with kids who are learning to ski!

Canaan Valley also has a really fun sled run, complete with a fire pit for those who prefer their winter action on a sled, as well as an ice skating rink. For those who enjoy cross-country skiing, White Grass Ski Center has over 50 km of maintained trails.

Lodge Loungers: For those less enamored with the chilly temps outside, you can get a day pass to the heated pool, hot tub, and fitness center at the Beech Club at Canaan Valley Resort. They also have an arcade (who said games are just for kids?), including a pool table and all sorts of games.

Wandering the shops and art galleries of Thomas and Davis is another great way to spend the day. Grab a hot beverage to go from Happy & More Bakery and Cafe, which serves great pastries, coffee, and café food. I was especially impressed with their pepperoni roll, a West Virginia delicacy. Be sure to check out my favorite store, Ella & Company—they have amazing earrings! And my mom is addicted to the funny greeting cards at Santangelo.

The Purple Fiddle has a great lineup of live music throughout the year and is a fun, cozy hangout day or night. Siriani’s Pizza does a bustling business with the ski crowds for takeout or dine-in, but remember to bring cash! I also love the Billy Motel for the lounge vibes and a very cool menu.

So whether you’re looking to hit the slopes, or looking to put your feet up, Canaan Valley and Timberline Mountain has something for everyone.
