Now Trending: Nothing But Net

I hate to use the word “trend.” I have never been someone who pays attention to what is “in,” especially in middle age. Now that I am over 50, I just want things that are comfortable and make me feel good. But sometimes there is a trend, or something so prevalent in a season when I go to market, that it is hard to ignore. Maybe we should say something “is trending,” using the noun as a verb; that might be more appropriate.

The style that was in every collection this spring was fabric, either in accessories or clothing, that had a netting look, or maybe pointelle is a better word for it. But this spring there are sweaters, shirts, and even shoes that are made with fabric that basically has little holes in it. Some are bigger and some are smaller, but you get what I mean. This is probably a reaction to the sheer movement we saw this fall and winter. I think this look is a little easier to wear. If you layer with a tank or shirt underneath, it doesn’t lose the cool factor that these layering pieces bring to a wardrobe.

We didn’t get this look from every brand we carry, but we have sweater styles from Tibi, Frank & Eileen, and lots from Allude. Then the surprising place I loved this look was in shoes. We have a great little pump from Rachel Comey and a flat from AGL. I love how, for summer, it just lightens up the heaviness of these styles.

Come by and check out our latest spring arrivals.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
