Natural pink diamonds are among Earth's most valuable and rare treasures. Top, vivid-colored stones can bring more than $2 million per carat at major auctions. Such prices come from their rarity as much as their beauty - only a tiny percentage of diamonds have pink color, and only a tiny percentage of these have a rich, vivid color.

How Do Fancy Color Diamonds Get Their Color?
Natural Fancy color diamonds get their color during the formation process. When chemical impurities are trapped within the diamond, they can affect the gem's color. For example, blue diamonds' color comes from the presence of boron.
Green diamonds get their color from radiation that displaced carbon atoms within the crystal's structure. This can occur naturally when diamonds form near radioactive rocks. It can also be done artificially through irradiation.
Pink diamonds, however, are a different story. Instead, the color is caused by a distortion in the diamond's crystal lattice, created by intense heat and great pressure from all directions after the stone's formation in the Earth. Many treatments exist to artificially enhance the color of diamonds, but the most valuable Fancy-colored diamonds got their color from nature.
