Framing Success: The Creative Path of Erickson & Ripper's Founders

Normally, I use this space to talk about Art, but today I’m excited to introduce you to our framing studios and my business partner, fellow rock band member, and talented artist, Jeff Erickson. Together, we own Erickson & Ripper Framing and Del Ray Picture Framing. We also have some exciting news to share!

Back in the late ’80s, Jeff and I were living the rock star life—he played guitar and bass, while I kept the beat as the drummer. We had a blast! After I graduated from the Corcoran School of Art, a friend suggested we open a frame shop. With Jeff’s experience at a large commercial framing company and our shared creative energy, we took the plunge. In 1994, with no money but plenty of ambition, we launched Erickson & Ripper in what is now known as the Mosaic District. Operating out of a warehouse, our tagline was, “The framers who come to you!” And we did—visiting offices, businesses, and homes across the area. Eventually, we set up shop in the basement at 628 North Washington Street, and before long, we expanded to occupy the entire three-story building.

When we first opened, I naively thought I could paint all day while waiting for clients to walk in—any seasoned business owner would’ve laughed! But we grew, honed our skills, and built a loyal client base. By the summer of 2006, we had opened our second location in Del Ray, each of us finally with our own art studios.

One constant through the years has been Curt, who has been with us for over two decades. I’m confident in saying Curt is likely the best picture framer in the business. His expertise, combined with his friendship, has been a cornerstone of our success. He’s framed it all and has been invaluable to our team.

Now, as Curt moves on to the role of mentor, we’re thrilled to announce the next chapter for our business. We’re welcoming a talented VCU graphic Art graduate, and niece of my fiance Maria Elizabeth, to our team! Brinnaria will bring fresh perspectives and innovative technology to our work. With these new additions  and updates, we’re investing in our production facility and preparing for the future with the same passion and dedication we’ve always had. For the past 31 years, we’ve taken pride in framing with the eye of an artist, and with this next chapter, we’re ready to continue serving you and your art for the next 32 years and beyond!

And one more thing, play my little video:
