Weekend Getaways: The *Short* Packing List

Packing for short trips should mean a short packing list. If you are not a regular traveler, however, packing for a short weekend can take longer than packing for a two-week trip overseas. My theory is that with either a short trip or long trip, many of us tend to pack for the unexpected. Have you ever assessed what you actually used after a trip against what you packed? This is probably the last thing on your mind after traveling, but it can provide a lot of good insight on where you overpack. As a stylist, you may think that I have this packing thing down. Nope. I recently went on a very short trip with my friend Hannah. Literally, we got up early, hit the road, and spent the day with our other friend Kelly, then returned the following day. I wish I had taken a picture of what she brought against what I brought. I could have stayed a week easily! I will bring to light the fact that both of us neglected to check the weather (rookie mistake for sure), but one of us was prepared for the unexpected cool temperatures and one of us toughed it out.The best advice I can give is to make sure you have as much information as humanly possible. Know what activities you are going to be doing and check the forecast. Putting a “core travel list” together isn’t a bad idea.My friends and clients who travel a lot have this down to a science. Angela gave me one of my best packing tips for toiletries a few years ago here on Stylebook. Taking this same approach to your wardrobe for packing would shed light on how to become an efficient traveler. We have all of the information; we just need to pay attention and harness it to lighten our load. Paying attention to your lifestyle will give you all the pieces of your weekend wardrobe.I’ve put together some great pieces from TSALT for weekend trips that work for summer. Core items are your ticket to footloose and fancy-free fun!

Your Weekend Summer Jaunt Packing List

A lightweight bag.Bring one that can double as a beach or pool bag.

A jacket.Denim jackets are so prevalent now, might as well go with the ease.

A t-shirt.Keeping the t-shirts simple means they won’t be as memorable if you need to wear more than once and this one can be worn under the jumpsuit!

White or natural white denim or pants. These are just a great core item for summer and breaks up the look if you wear the denim jacket.

A scarf. For travel, this is always a good call. It could be used as a wrap as well with the cami and white denim if you didn’t use the denim jacket.

A cami or tank. A simple look that can go out to dinner with its more graceful neckline.

Slip-on sneakers. These have a little statement but still work for a variety of activities.

The jumpsuit. Have you read my post on jumpsuits? They are better than a dress and functional. Add a pair of sandals or wedges and you have a cute look for a more elevated occasion.
