How to Choose the Perfect Date Night Spot in Alexandria
I have a few favorite spots for dates—especially first dates. The mood and tone of the setting can really make or break a night out, so I try to put some thought into where I go depending on the type of date. But honestly, these guidelines apply whether it’s your first or five hundredth date with someone.
We’re lucky to have some amazing date night spots right here in Alexandria. And right now? It’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy them—the weather is brilliant, everything is green and gorgeous, and the vibe is just right.

Trying to pick the perfect date night spot? Here are my must-haves:
1. A Good Bar Setup
I love sitting at the bar on a date. It feels more relaxed and less formal, and there’s a fun interplay with bartenders that adds some ease to the night. I always start with a cocktail (it's definitely spritz season for me right now!), so if a spot has a good spritz, that’s bonus points.
A good bar setup should include: a thoughtful cocktail program, comfy seats and purse hooks (very important!), attentive service and a balance of energy—not so crowded that it’s stressful, but not so empty it’s awkward. It also makes for a great waiting spot if someone gets there early.
Top picks: Matt & Tony’s, Whiskey & Oyster, and the upstairs bar at Virtue Feed & Grain
2. Lighting That Sets the Vibe
It doesn’t have to be super dark, but harsh or clinical lighting is a no-go. Warm or moody lighting sets the right tone—it should feel cozy, inviting, and a little special.
Hummingbird nails this perfectly. It strikes a balance between mood and visibility—romantic, but not too dim. I also love The Study for its high ceilings, flattering lighting, and that gorgeous backlit bar.
3. Flexible Food Options
These days, everyone has some kind of dietary preference or need. I'm lactose intolerant, and my best friend is vegetarian. On first dates, you don’t want to draw attention by making lots of menu modifications. I always look for spots with inclusive, flexible menus that don’t make anyone feel high-maintenance.
Chop Shop Taco and The Majestic do a great job of offering something for everyone without compromising on flavor or vibe.
4. After-Dinner Options
The best date night spots don’t stop at dinner. Ideally, they’re in walkable areas where you can extend the evening if things are going well—maybe for a nightcap, a stroll, or something sweet.
I still remember the time a date took me to Jeni’s for dairy-free ice cream after the restaurant had no dessert options for me. It was a thoughtful little detour, and it turned into one of my favorite post-dinner memories (and ice cream flavors!).
Barca and Ada’s are great picks this time of year—right on the waterfront, with built-in options for a breezy after-dinner walk or drink.
So there you have it—my personal checklist for the perfect date night spot.
