Just Try It On!
Before I went wedding dress shopping (a long time ago), one of my dearest friends told me to try on every type of dress. Her point was that we have ideas about what silhouette best suits us, but we’re not always right. She was correct. I wore an A-line dress with a full skirt that I tried on with her advice in mind.
I was reminded of that conversation when I started working at Kiskadee. We try on a lot of the clothing we sell, and there are numerous times when pieces come in that I am certain will look terrible on me. Then I put it on and am pleasantly surprised. This happens a lot, actually, and reminds me that my idea of how I look is often at odds with how I actually look. I know I’m not alone in this because when customers come in and are ambivalent about something, we always suggest they just try it on! Many times, they’re surprised at how much they like something after all. This goes for sizes, too, by the way – sometimes you just need to size up or down. So, in the spirit of just trying it on, here are some things I think you should try on next time you visit us!
Sweatshirt dresses! I thought a sweatshirt dress would make me look like I was wearing a giant sweatshirt, and I already have giant sweatshirts. It turns out they have a great shape, and they’re brilliant cooler weather dressing because you can wear sneakers or maybe some leggings and boots and voila! You’re dressed and comfortable while looking stylish.
LA Made, $128, In-store exclusive; Michael stars, $168
Volume or puffed sleeves! I initially avoided blouses and tops and dresses with extra volume or puffed sleeves because I have broad shoulders and didn’t think they would be flattering. I tried several on, and I bet you know what happened next - I liked some of them! They were definitely flattering!
THML Dress, $108; THML Top, $78
Finally, something I never have to be talked into trying on - animal print. We have so many options in the store right now! Celeste wrote about it recently. However, two of my favorites are these sweaters from Wooden Ships and Tyler Boe.
