Maritime-Inspired Style: How to Wear Spring’s Fisherman Trend

Every season, there are trends. I hate to use that word, because to many, it implies something will soon go out of style. That’s not how I mean it. From going to market and working as a buyer, I’ve learned that certain styles or colors tend to appear in every line. As we know from The Devil Wears Prada, it’s often a trickle-down effect from the luxury brands. I’ve also learned it can start with the fabric markets—they can set the tone for a season. Another reason? Consumers crave newness. If “structured” has reigned supreme for a few years, then naturally, the pendulum will swing back toward casual.

This spring, there was definitely a fisherman trend. We picked up on it when we saw so many fisherman-style sandals—they were everywhere, along with boat shoes. Combined with all the classic stripes, cable knits, and rainwear, it was clear this look was having a moment. You could call it the Maine vibe. And as someone who aspires to “summer” in Maine, I’m here for it.

So dig out your old yellow raincoat and your coziest cable knit sweater, and mix in a few new pieces—like the fisherman sandal. We’re all in on the maritime-inspired look, and we’ve put together some outfits for our Stylebook readers to help you channel it.

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
