My 5 Packing Tips For International Travel

Buongiorno!

I’m writing this post as my hubby drives down the winding roads in Tuscany en route to Siena!

Katie asked me what we should write about for our July post, and I knew immediately that I wanted to share my tips for traveling abroad this summer.

Nicole Seifert texted me partway through my trip and said how much she loved my photos and if I would gather some tips to send her for her travel to Europe this summer. If you know me, you know I immediately started to create a list in my head. So, this post came easy!

I used to be a huge planner… but now, with the three stores and three kiddos, I’m pretty much a fly-by-the-seat of my pants person. I know you won’t believe me when I say that, but it’s true. But the best thing I did planning for this trip was to purchase packing cubes for everyone in my family. This way, everyone is super organized in their individual suitcases in each hotel that we stay in. I have boys who think nothing of rummaging through to find one small item, and then everything in the suitcase is a mess until MOM re-organizes.

Clothing

Mint Condition was the key to curating the perfect European vacation wardrobe. Packing very lightweight cotton dresses, some solids to wear over again styled differently, and some florals for that perfect Parisian photo! The key in all of this is lightweight. Here in Europe, air conditioning does not run as cold as in the United States. I did pack a few lightweight pants. However, dresses were the most comfortable and could take you from sightseeing straight to dinner.

Shoes

I definitely overpacked in this department. I am going to Paris and Venice and Rome, and I want all of my fabulous shoes with me. WRONG! I purchased a pair of rose gold Birkenstocks in a small town in Germany, and it was the best decision I’ve made on this trip! Dainty Valentino flats do not cut it on old cobblestone streets! Get a pair of comfortable sandals, whether Birkenstock or another brand. Find a white or metallic pair, so it feels a little more special, but you are still comfortable. I would also grab a pair of fashionable yet comfortable sneakers, but it is hot and having your feet breathe is wonderful.

Handbags… Same as the shoe sitch!

Pack a good Crossbody. Just like with my shoe debacle, I packed a ton of handbags because I wanted all the things to be with me, and I definitely regret it! I’ve used the same Crossbody almost the entire trip. No need for a clutch or something small, especially if you have children! Pack a midsize Crossbody and go with it!

Bring an extra suitcase!

I was told to do this, and I said no, I’ll have plenty of room; I’m not going to buy much! Wrong, again! No matter how hard you try, you will want to shop. Bring an extra suitcase to make the transition from city to city or country to country much more manageable. If you’re traveling companions are anything like mine, they do not want to schlep all of your shopping bags for you!

Your hair

Do not expect to have beautiful locks in Europe! It’s au naturale over here! First of all, it’s HOT with (did I mention this already) little air conditioning!?! Second, the hair dryers in the hotels have as little power as the A.C.! For me, it was low bun or BUST!

I hope these crazy little tips help you wherever your travels take you this summer!

If you need help with any of it, you know where to find me! 😉

Megan's career in retail/merchandising began in the mid-nineties standing in front of a woodsy smelling Abercrombie and Fitch. Sporting an oversized plaid flannel and bootcut jeans she said hello to every customer that eagerly walked into the popular retailer.  Little did Megan know that, while creating a perfect "denim wall" and dressing in all of the latest fashion that the lifestyle brand offered she was building the foundation for her fun and exciting career!

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Megan managed multiple A&F stores before she moved on to an assistant buyer position in contemporary dresses at the local Arlington-based retailer Hecht's (now Macy's). She gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge before moving onto a different facet of the business at Calvin Klein Jeans. Megan worked her way from retail coordinator to East-Coast regional manager helping to create the Calvin Klein aesthetic in department stores from Boston to Miami.

After her first son, Ethan was born, her position at CKJ was eliminated, due to the harsh economic conditions at the time.

This is how 529 was born! Megan quickly began to see how fast Ethan was growing out of his clothing. She knew other moms had the same amount of adorable "gently worn" clothing piling up. Combining her love of retail and her obsession with dressing Ethan gave her the idea to try and sell this clothing. 529 became a popular "pop-up" shop in the Alexandria area and once the following was big enough, a brick and mortar store in historic Old Town. 529 Kids Consign exemplifies who Megan is and what she has learned throughout her career. It's a warm, well-organized, well-edited boutique that attracts moms from all over the DC metro area.

On any given visit to the store you may be greeted by three boys dressed to the nines..they too have the passion.
