Farewell, Angelica

What is that lyric by The Rolling Stones, “if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need.” That song plays in my head as I write this piece. I also want to cry as I type. About three years ago, our store got exactly what it needed, Angelica. She slid or dropped in our DMs; I never know which verb is the right one on that.

I just happened to be looking at our Instagram account one night, and in popped a message that basically said, “I want to work at your stores.” I immediately responded and asked when we could meet. I don’t even know if it was 24 hours later, but I was at South Block, sitting across from Angelica and thinking this all had to be too good to be true. She had amazing style, which, let’s face it, is great for us and tons of retail experience. Then when I asked her when she wanted to work, she replied, “every Saturday.”

All this was really too good to be true. But these aren’t the reasons I want to cry. I want to cry because Angelica is absolute magic. You will not meet a kinder or more genuine person. Anyone who has worked with her during the last three years knows this. This month Angelica and her family packed up their bags and moved back to Germany, where they had lived once before. We are so excited for their new adventure but so terribly sad to see her go.

Before she left, we had to ask her to do one last photo shoot for us, and of course, we had to feature her favorite brand, Tibi. Angelica might be the only human who loves Tibi as much as I do. She also just wears it so, so well. She embodies that casual-but-sophisticated vibe that Tibi has perfected.

We will miss her so while she is gone. Angelica will still help us out behind the scenes entering orders, compiling lookbooks, and so many other things that she also does. But we will miss seeing her smiling face, and I know all the people who have shopped with her or follow us on Instagram will also.

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
