The Oversized Coat

The oversized coat is the pinnacle piece for winter 2023. I can’t believe I didn’t have one sooner. The key reason why I love this item so much is the amount of room there is for layering, and the amount of comfort, ease, and wearability that comes with it. I can layer a shirt, sweater, and blazer (all together) under my oversized coats. As the weather sways back and forth, I can de-layer and still look put-together on the outside!  

Oversized Coat Styling Tip 

Options. Options. Options. The more belts, loops, and buttons on an oversized coat, the more opportunities for styling. Tie the belt around your waist when you need to feel more put-together. Remove it completely, and let the coat hang open when you want to feel more laid back, etc.

The Scarf

Many of my clients have a billion scarves tucked away in their closets like acorns! The scarves just sit there and never get worn. I will go ahead and generalize when I say that most women have so many scarves that are pretty, but non-functional, because they are so awkwardly small, awkwardly skinny, or the fabric is just…awkward. When I think of a good winter scarf I think big, warm, and cashmere. Next, let’s not overcomplicate the wrapping of a scarf. Do one or two big loops around your neck, and have both ends hanging free on either side. 

Scarf Styling Tip

When it’s super cold, I like to put my scarf on first, and then add the coat, keeping the ends bundled inside. I’ll also wrap the scarf around my hair when it’s down, and keep a couple of face-framing hair pieces hanging out. 

The Hat

Hats are my ultimate accessory for life. Winter hats have always been a revolving door of wool wide-brim hats and modern chic beanies, but thanks to the show, Succession, I have added wool baseball caps into the rotation. Beanies and baseball caps have taken a front seat for me this year. Both add an element of effortlessness and unexpectedness to an outfit that’s otherwise polished.

Hat Styling Tip 

When you are dying to reach for that wool wide-brim hat because you think it will complete your weekend look, opt for the baseball hat. You may be surprised by how much balance it brings to the entire look.
