New + Old Ways to Shop with Red Barn Mercantile, Penny Post, and Pippin Toy Co.

We recently did a survey of our community and got a ton of great feedback. I’m a big believer in feedback, even if it stings, so this was an important exercise for us. We took it seriously and are extremely grateful for everyone’s time and willingness to share their thoughts and ideas. There were many takeaways that you’ll likely see more of next year, but there was one thing we wanted to implement for the holidays: offering more flexible hours to meet people where they are. Whether earlier or later, we wanted to find solutions that make shopping easier. Here are a few ideas we’re experimenting with…

New holiday hours. From now until December 21 Red Barn Mercantile, Penny Post, and Pippin Toy Co. will be open from 10am to 7pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On Sunday 12pm to 5pm at Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post and 10am to 5pm at Pippin Toy Co. Leave work by six and pop in to grab what you need, or tag your co-parent to take over so you can make a quick trip sans kiddos. Or better yet, get a sitter or grab a friend and make dinner reservations for an after-shopping meal. Make a whole night of it!

Sensory shopping hour. This idea came from one of our team members, and I’m really excited about it. For many people, sensory overload is very real, so we’re offering a short window with no music, low lighting, unlit trees, and a calm environment—plus help when you need it. If this sounds appealing to you or a loved one, shop with all three stores on Wednesdays from 9am to 10am. We’ll be there going about our opening chores if you need anything.

Limited after-hours ticketed shopping nights. A lovely customer gave us this intriguing idea. Traffic, parking, crowds—sometimes it’s just too much. She wanted a more relaxed shopping experience where she could browse at a leisurely pace without holiday chaos. She suggested ticketed after-hours shopping for a small group, and it sparked something for us. So this year, for a $20 ticket, a small group can shop at all three stores from 6:30pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday evenings. The stores will be all yours to explore and enjoy the true delight of gift-giving this season.

In-store pickup and shipping. If getting to the store is tough, remember we always offer free in-store pickup through our online shops: RedBarnMercantile.com, ShopPennyPost.com, and PippinToyCo.com. Shop in your PJs at home and pick up when it works for you. Or heck, have it shipped if that’s easier! If I can pay for DoorDash delivery, why not pay to get my gifts sent to my door? No judgment, I promise. Though, I would be remiss if I didn’t share that during the holidays it does take us a little longer to pull orders but we promise to do it quickly!

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
