Zhuzh: What Does It Mean and How Do You Do It?

Ever feel like your home could use a little extra something? It’s come together nicely and you’re happy with it, but…it needs a little oomph. Time to zhuzh it up! This word has taken the place of tweak, though we still use the word tweak in design. When we tweak something, it might mean moving around furniture, etc., whereas if we zhuzh something we’re adding to it. Just like zhuzhing your outfit might include adding a belt but not necessarily changing your whole outfit.

Take a look around your home or office. There are zhuzh opportunities everywhere! Here are some touches that will make your home feel and look more luxurious:

  • Swap out disposable napkins for cloth ones. They instantly elevate your table and are eco-friendly.

  • Monogrammed towels are a chic, custom touch. They look great in every bathroom, and you can have fun with the monogram colors and font styles, like those offered by Stitched by NPK.

  • Fancy paper towel holders add a wow factor to your kitchen countertop. Michael Aram makes beautiful ones, and they are definitely worth the splurge.

  • Tissue box covers turn a plain household item into a chic objet d’art and allow you to place them anywhere in the house.

  • Water carafes look so much better than bottled water on your nightstand. They will make your guests feel like they are in a five-star hotel!

  • A soft throw is a great addition in a bedroom or living area. Also an easy way to incorporate seasonal accents in your home. Be sure to fold it rather than just throwing it on a piece of furniture to make it more special.

  • Never underestimate the power of trays. They make any area look more put together and stylish.

These are all great tips and Patina can provide just about all these options. If you decide you need more than just a little zhuzh here and there, we’re having our semi-annual upholstery sale which will run through the end of August.

See you soon!

Amanda Mertins was born in Ohio and graduated the University of Maryland with a degree in Economics. She started moving and editing furniture and accessories while in grade school and hasn’t stopped since. She enjoys baking desserts and playing with her grandchildren.

Kim Weiler was born in Pennsylvania and graduated the University of the Arts with a degree in graphic design. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired by one of her professors at the Katz Wheeler Design firm. She loves design, gardening, sweet tea and all French bulldogs.

Amanda and Kim are excellent complements to one another-one could even say the Yin and Yang of design. Being very different people but with interconnected forces is the reason their partnership continues to flourish.
