Why Your Home Should Never Be “Finished”

I often hear exasperated sighs of, “I just want it finished!” when people are furnishing or re-furnishing their homes. I can’t relate; I don’t ever want my home to be “finished.” Just as I wouldn’t wear the same wardrobe for the rest of my life, I don’t expect my house to look the same year after year.

While we need to have the larger anchor pieces in place like sofas, comfy chairs, and tables, it’s the décor pieces and smaller furniture items which add personality and flair to our residence. This is where vintage pieces play their part in giving our homes their distinct character. Who wants to walk into someone else’s home and see the exact same pieces? Aren’t we smiling inside when someone admires a family heirloom or  unique chair they’ve never seen before?

Loving vintage pieces doesn’t mean our houses will look like they are stuck in the past. You will find new pieces and rearrange others for them to fit and work together.

When you love something, you will always find a space for it. It is through these touches and additions that our homes evolve, just as we do, creating new memories and backdrops for our lives. Changing things up allows our homes to grow with us and reflect who we are now–and who we will become.

Come browse at Patina Polished Living and be inspired to never be “finished.”

Patina Polished Living was created 10 years ago by friends Amanda Mertins and Kimberly Weiler.

Amanda Mertins was born in Ohio and graduated the University of Maryland with a degree in Economics. She started moving and editing furniture and accessories while in grade school and hasn’t stopped since. She enjoys baking desserts and playing with her grandchildren.

Kim Weiler was born in Pennsylvania and graduated the University of the Arts with a degree in graphic design. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired by one of her professors at the Katz Wheeler Design firm. She loves design, gardening, sweet tea and all French bulldogs.

Amanda and Kim are excellent complements to one another-one could even say the Yin and Yang of design. Being very different people but with interconnected forces is the reason their partnership continues to flourish.
