Late-Summer Reading List

Every month, we have an all-staff meeting. It’s our chance to get together and talk about how the business is doing, review what we have coming up over the next month, do any housekeeping, and share anything valuable we have learned. We always start with an ice breaker to loosen us up and get us comfortable with sharing. Summer may be waning, but there is still time to get in some good leisurely reading, so our recent ice breaker was to share what books captured our attention this season. I thought I’d share the list so you can read one or two more books while lounging by the pool or shore.

The list has a little something for everyone. From biography and fantasy to intrigue and romance, this list has you covered. As for me, I added Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Burnout was recommended to me by a fellow female business owner. Whether you own a business or not, this is something you should absolutely read. It’s validating, empowering, and tremendously helpful. As for The Lord of the Rings, I’m the last in my family to read the books. And, by read, I mean listen to the audio books because I don’t have the attention span to actually read a book. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are read by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the movies. He is a masterful vocal chameleon, seamlessly switching from one character to another. It’s highly entertaining and a joy to listen to while cooking (two of the ways I cope with stress).

Below you will find a long list of new and old favorites from our teams at Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post.  Grab them at your local library or at Old Town Books and enjoy!

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
