Why Work At Red Barn Mercantile Or Penny Post?

So, this is a question I ask myself all the time. Believe me, I understand that anyone who works for Red Barn Mercantile or Penny Post has plenty of options to work just about anywhere. I don’t take that lightly so I’m always asking myself what would make someone work on our team and how can we keep them, support them, and grow them into a position inside the company or even get them to their next destination outside the company. We have been extremely fortunate to have wonderful people on our team and now we are looking for several more.

Taking care of our people is our number one priority. Though we stumble from time to time, it’s the one thing we are always working on. How can make Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post a warm and welcoming employment experience that gives our team a livable wage? Staffing is the hardest part of running a small business. Ask anyone you know. So, we strive to get it right for our team so they are happy and stay for a long time. Some things we do are provide vacations, health insurance and 401(k)s to full-time staff, offer flexible work schedules (though weekends and holiday availability are a must) so you can have work/life balance, have a generous store discount, and practice Open Book Management so each team member can see how they affect the business and get rewarded at the end of the year for their role (this is brand new so we are still building on this.) Also, food is my love language so you will always be well-fed when we gather as a team.

As we get ready for the new store to open, we are shifting people around. Jessica, Red Barn Mercantile’s store manager, is moving into a new management role that will support all three stores. That means we will need to replace her at the helm of Red Barn Mercantile. If you’re great with people, have managed a team (or a family), enjoy retail, and have a knack for sending the best gifts then please contact us! You can find the job description here and email us here.

We also need help at Penny Post. Several of our part-time team members are moving on after graduating from either high school or college or just moving on to their next big adventure. So, if you love paper – and who doesn’t?! – and are looking for a part-time job, then please email us here. Find out more about the positions here and email us here. We need people that can work weekdays as well as weekends. If that’s you then we’d love to hear from you!

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
