Makers Mile 2023: Marinades, Blowouts, Flowers, & More

Old Town Business is once again excited to bring you Makers Mile. This weekend, February 25 and 26, join more than a dozen of your favorite boutiques and restaurants for a weekend of learning some new skills.

Nurture the artist in you, wood and paint collide for home projects at Boxwood and AR Workshop. Watch artist demonstrations at the Torpedo Factory and learn collage-making skills from exhibiting artist Cami Mancilla at Galactic Panther. At Penny Post, make a colorful floral arrangement using specialty crepe paper, and a beautiful custom charm at Wear Ever Jewelry.

Sign up for shrub making at Shop Made in Virginia, then take it over to Vermilion to pair it with a spirit. Or, how about Sbagliato Cocktail making at Theismann’s Restaurant? Cary Kelly will be out of the kitchen and at Red Barn Mercantile to show you how to design bespoke spice blends to elevate everyday cooking. And, add marinades to your pantry with Made in ALX.

Looking to up your beauty game? How about Blow Drying 101 with Manes by Rachel, plus tips and tricks on how to make that blowout last over at Salon deZEN.

There is plenty for the kids too! Mocktail classes (as well as spirit-free cocktails) at Umbrella Dry Drink, Friendship bracelets (though I think these are great for adults too!) at Pink & Brown, and art activities for mini makers at the Art League in the Torpedo Factory and Made in ALX in Old Town North.

Finally, let’s not forget our furry and potted friends. Teddy’s Tumeric Tamer will be set up at The Lorien to show you the benefits of all-natural ingredients on your pet’s health. Buy a hand-crafted planter at Ten Thousand Villages and get a free succulent that you can plant right away!

So, you can see this will be a great event. Purchase your tickets today and pick up your tote bag (which is your ticket to all the workshops and demonstrations) at The Lorien on Saturday or Sunday. Tickets are limited so grab them today!

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
