Shop and Save: Tax-Free Weekend Hits Old Town!

August has arrived, and with it comes one of the best times to shop in Old Town—two back-to-back weekends of serious savings and fresh finds. As a shop owner, I can confidently say these are some of our favorite weekends of the year. After a bustling summer, we’re ready to wrap up the sale season and welcome all things fall.

To kick things off, a group of local businesses has come together for Tax Free Weekend, aligning with the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday. This statewide initiative was originally created to help families save on back-to-school essentials, but the list of qualifying items has grown over time.

That said, many of the unique goods you’ll find in Old Town shops aren’t covered under the state’s exemption list—so we’re taking matters into our own hands. This Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2, over 20 participating stores will cover the sales tax on all purchases. It might not sound like a huge discount, but that 6% savings adds up fast, especially if you’ve had your eye on something special.

Can’t make it this weekend? No worries. Be sure to mark your calendars for next weekend’s Alexandria Sidewalk Sale, another beloved tradition where local shops line the streets with even deeper markdowns. We can’t wait to see you at The Hive!

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
