Spring Trend Report: Mules & Slides

Earlier this week we talked about ruffles being one of the biggest trends in clothing. So what is the newest look for our feet? Once again, it isn’t something new because nothing in fashion is totally original; it is taken from the past and augmented. Those new iterations are what now dominate the shows and then our shelves. This spring it is the mule. There are pointy version with kitten heels, flat versions that are perfect when you are on the go, and lower versions with a chunky heel. The most updated version, however, is the heeled mule. This is by far my favorite version. The teal woven one by AGL is already in my closet and I don’t think I will be able to pass up the newest basic black version from Stuart Weitzman – so if you’re size 7.5 you’d better hurry in to the store before I beat you to it.Personally, I sometimes have a hard time with mules since I have really narrow feet. Before you start with me, I know, I know, I know – you’re shocked I don’t carry narrow sizes. Go figure. What has worked for me are styles that have a higher vamp so it stays on my foot. Since I live in jeans and tend to always wear sneakers, this is a great way for me to dress up my typically casual look.

Years ago I ordered some by Hunter and Tory Burch and I was ridiculed by everyone at the store. I kept explaining how in the late 80s on game days for lacrosse we would wear our uniform (a skirt) and then tube socks pushed down and ADIDAS athletic slides. This was my chance to recapture my youth and I was not going to let it slip by.Well here it is again and finally folks are embracing it! We have pink ones from Vince, bow versions from Ulla Johnson, and I am holding out for a red suede version by Paul Green. Oh wait, I already got the Ulla Johnson version! These reminded me of my early 90s Birkenstock days – they’re worn with socks as well – so it was too hard to pass them up.There are more refined versions, and really they aren’t an athletic shoe. They’re more of a sandal, perfect for folks that don’t like to have anything between their toes. The bottom line is this: get your pedicures, ladies, spring is almost here.
