Street Style: Julie Detomo

I’m new to the Stylebook community and when I first heard about the Street Style feature, one person came to my mind instantly, Julie Detomo. I first met Julie and her husband shortly after I started working in Old Town, a little over a decade ago now. They were referred to me by a colleague at the time. I loved having the pair in my chair, we would talk about our lives and all things Old Town: events happening in the area, what’s new on King Street, along with what some of our old faithful’s are.

In the last decade the Detomo’s have grown their family by two handsome boys. I love seeing all their fun family adventures on social media and my personal favorite, their Halloween costumes! We all know how seriously Old Town takes Halloween, and The Detomo family comes to play!

In today’s world of hustle and bustle, I always enjoy running into Julie (typically on our way to Misha’s). She has a calming presence that makes you feel comfortable and invites you to pause for a moment. She always has time to ask how you are doing and it’s nothing short of genuine.

Aside from being an overall awesome human being, Julie’s style is another thing I love. Even if it’s Saturday morning with her boys in tow on the way to Misha’s, this girl is always looking swaggy.

Keep reading and get to know one of my favorite local ladies even better!

ABOUT YOU

Neighborhood: OTX central

What is your hometown? Springfield, Virginia

What would surprise people about you?  I learned to play the drums when I turned 30.

Favorite movie: I spend a lot of time watching movies, picking a favorite is next to impossible. My childhood favorite is Pump up the Volume (1990), if I could ever find a way to watch it again. My husband would tell you my real favorite movie is Clue (1985). I know every word of this wacky film.

Favorite Book: Les Miserables by Hugo (the unabridged version)

Guilty Pleasure: Watching documentaries about cults.

Latest binge-watch: I binge podcasts more than anything. My latest was "If Books Could Kill" with Michael Hobbes and Peter Shamshiri.

Bucket list travel destination: Hiking all three of the USA's long trails: The PCT, Continental Divide, and the AT. This would of course take years and would not happen all at once, but I would love to do this triple crown.

STYLE

Define your style in three words or less: Anna Wintour's agita. I'm only half-kidding on that. In reality, my style is clean, unfussy, and metropolitan.

The go-to piece in your wardrobe: Denim. When in doubt I reach for a denim top, denim pants, or denim jacket. Occasionally, all of them.

Favorite trend: Coastal Grandmother

Beauty product you can’t live without:  Red lipstick for when I am dressed down. I could be in sneakers and sweats but with a red lip, I feel ready

Boots, sneakers, or sandals? I've been loving mules, actually. Is that like a mix of all three?

WELLNESS

Go-to way to de-stress: Riding my bike around the neighborhood and beyond into D.C.

Most fun way to stay active: Hot yoga at Rising Sol. The teachers manage to keep the mood light at 105 degrees.

Wellness goal: Never to miss preventative care like mammograms and physicals.

Want to try: Handstands. My headstands are strong, but I am intimidated (read: terrified) by the handstand.

Proudest wellness achievement: Throwing away my scale.

HOME

Favorite room in your home: My dining room when I have set an elevated tablescape for a special meal or guests. The way this is seen from the whole house makes my heart happy.

Antiques, modern, or a mix? As long as the style works, I don't care if it's new or old.

Last item bought for your home: Basement shelves. My kids have turned our basement into a Lego empire. Shelving was required to mitigate the chaos.

Favorite way to entertain: Having friends over for food and drinks, and letting kids run amok. The silliness is the entertainment.

Clutter-free or well-lived in? I attempt to make my home appear clutter-free but it's a real visual trick. We have stuff everywhere.

Next planned purchase: A custom fireplace mantel from Mount Vernon Woodworks.

ALEXANDRIA

What do you love about Alexandria Stylebook? I love to read what our small business owners say about trends and the advice they have. The familiar faces make me happy that I live here.

Favorite spot in Alexandria: Misha’s. Good coffee, the best crew, and a near guarantee to run into a friend.

Last purchase in Alexandria: A bottle of Cabernet Franc from Ben at Le Vintage

Best food spot: Sisters Thai, Spice Kraft Indian Bistro, and Momo's Sushi are in a 3-way tie for my most frequently craved food.

Favorite local organization: ALIVE! House of Alexandria. They do incredible work.

Favorite annual Alexandria event: Alexandria's birthday fireworks (1812 overture with cannons—fantastic)
