Preppy Roots, Modern Style: My Fall Favorites from Ann Mashburn
I’ve mentioned before that I have a bit of a preppy side. Growing up in the Midwest in the ’70s and ’80s, I lived next to a country club and spent countless hours on the tennis courts. Think Lacoste polos, K-Swiss sneakers, and crisp athletic stripes — that’s where my love of all things classic began.
By college, my style had evolved into blazers, cable-knit sweaters, and corduroys — often paired with a baseball cap and (regrettably) hiking boots. Looking back, it’s a little terrifying, but it’s also where my appreciation for timeless pieces took root.
That’s probably why I’ve always been drawn to Ann Mashburn. Her collections feel like an elevated version of my youth — polished yet playful, sophisticated yet familiar. When I visit her showroom, there are always pieces I can’t resist, and this fall’s lineup is no exception. Check out The Ann Mashburn LookBook:
I’m especially loving the Fair Isle sweaters, boiled wool Tyrolean jacket, and the Arian cardigan — all beautifully made, nostalgic pieces that remind me of what I wore in my twenties (only infinitely better). I still remember buying my first boiled wool blazer at Frugal Fannie’s when I moved to D.C. — I thought I was so big time.
And of course, I can’t say no to a little leopard print, so the wrap skirt immediately caught my eye. But where Ann Mashburn truly shines is in her jackets. The Kimono Cashplaid Shirt Jacket, inspired by a Sid Mashburn men’s favorite, along with the Navy Puffer and Khaki Dry Waxed Poplin Jacket, are must-haves. Whichever of these three are left after the event are definitely coming home with me.
Oh — and the shoes. Ann makes the best shoes. I’ll be snagging the cowboy boots she sent for the event. My friend Deidra “borrowed” my old black pair when we moved out of college in ’95, and I think it’s finally time for a replacement.
