TSALT Chat: Shara Posner

Over the last year I’ve really enjoyed meeting interesting women in Old Town, dressing them up for these posts and then writing about the cool things they do and how they are impacting our lovely city. As I thought back on how I met this week’s lovely subject I realized that I met her through another fabulous lady that I wrote about a few months ago. Do you remember my article on Kathy Seifert and the Seaport Foundation back in May? It was at the annual Seaport Event that I met Dr. Shara Posner and now here we are!

Ever since I exchanged phone numbers with this fellow 732 gal (New Jersey area code), I knew she was cool. Shara is a local chiropractor and the founder of Back to Health. When she’s not cracking backs or hanging with her kiddos you’ll find her coaching at Orangetheory Fitness and Mind The Mat. Every time I see her I am immediately reminded that so many things can get done in one day! Shara is a true example of a woman who is successfully juggling her many passions, but most importantly doing it in a balanced way.

Awesome boss mom bio aside, I’ll be completely honest when I say the first thing I noticed about Shara was her style. She has a little bit of edge to her and she knows how to rock it without seeming over the top. Shara is the client who was first in line for the vegan leather Nanushka skirt, if that gives you a better idea. Scroll down and read a little bit more about her, check out her awesome fall looks and then follow her on instagram!

Where are you from?Manalapan, NJ

What brought you to Alexandria and how long have you been here? I was drawn to Old Town because it was so cute. I have some experience with the DMV because I attended U of MD for my undergraduate degree. Go terps! I’ve been here 15 years since this past August.

In 2004 you started Back to Health, a chiropractic care center. Can you elaborate on the types of services you offer? We offer a variety of chiropractic services including cupping, flossing, adjustments, physical medicine and cold laser. About 11 years ago we introduced additional services of acupuncture and massage (deep tissue, prenatal massage, reiki, TMJ services, etc).

What motivated you to go out and start this amazing business?I knew I wanted to get into some sort of physical medicine when I was younger. During my freshman year of college I worked for a chiropractor. When I saw him healing people with his hands and without medication I was fascinated. So I had found my calling. The rest was natural, I was never really meant to work for someone else ;) so I became my own boss.

You are clearly very passionate about fitness, too! Can you chat about your two side gigs? The fitness stuff is a hobby that’s taking over! I have been physically active all my life and love how it makes me feel. After having two kids I ramped up my gym attendance to get back that pre-baby body. Soon I started to  recognize that reviewing how to perform specific posture related and strength training exercises in my practice would improve patient outcomes. So I turned to Dr Megan Brown and worked to become a certified Hawt Pilates instructor. Around the same time an opportunity came up to coach Orangetheory. I thought why not? I think both of these gigs have made me a better physician. I see the movements that cause injury and now I am better at rehabbing the injury so the patient can return back to activity.

On a totally separate note (because you’re such a fashion lover) what trend are you most excited about for fall?I know it’s passé but wild prints. I just can’t get enough....give me some big hoop earrings and a leopard print piece (top, skirt, shoes whatever) and my jersey accent will come out.
