3 Ways to Prioritize Fitness in the Back-to-School Scramble

How in the world are you going to keep the fitness you built over the summer? Or how are you going to achieve your fitness goals this fall since summer fitness didn’t quite materialize?

I understand that gym memberships and pre-dawn workouts no longer fit your reality. I’ve been there. But fear not, there are smarter ways to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule. Here are three strategies to stay focused on your wellness during the crazy days of September:

1. Embrace the Power of Block Time

Gone are the days of spontaneous gym sessions. In the land of midlife, structure is key. Here's where the magic of block scheduling comes in. Carve out dedicated "fitness blocks" in your calendar, treating them with the same respect as a doctor's appointment or a work meeting. Schedule these blocks early in the week to avoid last-minute scrambles. This visual commitment helps you prioritize your workouts and avoid the "I'll just do it tomorrow" trap. So right now, grab your calendar and note at least three times this week that you’ll commit to movement.

2. Find Your Fitness Tribe

Exercising with friends can be a game-changer. Friends hold us accountable and can motivate us to achieve our goals. Grab a workout buddy for a power walk in the park, join a local movement class, or find a lunchtime yoga group. I also invite you to check out my new offering, Exercise, Food, Sleep, & Stress Relief for Women: 8 Weeks of Wellness with Adrien Cotton. In this virtual 8-week program, we’ll focus on one topic each week, offering you community and accountability while you navigate your wellness journey. Want to learn more? 3. Short Workouts, Big Results

Let's be honest, sometimes a full hour at the gym just isn't realistic. But here's the good news: short bursts of movement can be incredibly effective, especially when done consistently. Take a walk in the morning, try one of my 5 Minute Flows at your lunch break, or enjoy some yoga or stretching to wind down in the evening.

Bonus Tip: Sneak in Movement Throughout the Day

Remember, every little bit of movement counts! Make everyday activities an opportunity to move your body. Park further away from the grocery store and walk those extra steps. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Do some lunges or squats while waiting for the laundry to finish. Turn on some music and have a fun dance party with your kids while cleaning the house! These small movements add up throughout the day and contribute to your overall activity level.

Prioritizing your health and fitness isn't selfish, it's essential. By incorporating these simple tips, you'll be better equipped to tackle the back-to-school whirlwind with confidence and energy. You deserve to feel strong, vibrant, and ready to conquer anything this academic year throws your way!
