Adrien Cotton Meets Ms. Moxie

I recently sat down with Emily Coccia, Owner and CEO of Ms. Moxie's Moon Shop, a menstrual health boutique for every phase and everyone, to talk about life, how to serve women best, and our upcoming program: Why Fitness at 40 Feels Elusive: Strategies to Feel Your Best at Any Age. It’s on October 3 from 6-7:30pm at Ms. Moxie’s on 102 N. Fayette Street in Old Town, Alexandria.

Adrien: Let’s jump right in! I love that you have brought an openness, a vulnerability and a space for women to share their stories about all things being woman, including periods, sexual health and menopause. What a breath of fresh air you are!

What do you believe are the top concerns of women you meet at Ms. Moxie’s?

Emily: Thank you so much for the kind words! I feel the same about you! As for top concerns, at the shop, I most often hear, “This is TMI, but…” and the key part is that they feel comfortable enough to finish that sentence. Once they do, it’s amazing how many common symptoms and challenges come up—things like insomnia, hot flashes, dryness, anxiety, and brain fog. When people open up about these issues, they often realize that these changes make them feel disconnected from their old selves and this can be really lonely and confusing. Just knowing that these experiences are common can make everyone feel less isolated and more understood.

Adrien: That’s one of the reasons why I’m so excited about our event. We’ll have the opportunity to dive deep into the wellness practices that work from the time women are thirty to when they are in their eighties. It will be so great to share that how we approach our wellness at various times in our lives is different, why, and simple ways to feel our best at any age.

Emily: Absolutely! I’m thrilled about our event, too. It’s a fantastic chance to share practical solutions and understand how our wellness needs evolve over time. With the lack of extensive medical research on menstrual health and related issues, our session will be a unique opportunity to curate and share new data and insights. Plus, in learning from each other’s experiences we can forge new friendships and build a supportive community.

Adrien: Yes, yes. It’s so hard to figure out our path to feeling our best when we are surrounded by so many conflicting messages: social media; friends with the best of intentions who want to help us; and don’t forget about what we learned in our teens and twenties.

In our talk, I am excited to show the science and the “how to’s” for getting strong, maintaining muscle, and just being there to answer any questions your customers have about fitness at any age.  I agree it will be fantastic to see so many amazing women from our area. One thing we often forget to do is prioritize ourselves – put ourselves first on the calendar. This night out is the perfect way for women to schedule some time for themselves. Another way that women can stress less is to find their people. In all my programs, we preach community support and that’s one of Ms. Moxie’s tenets, too, right, Emily?

Emily: Yes! As we work to break the taboo around menstrual health, it’s crucial that we provide a safe space for exploring these topics and the products that best support our particular needs and lifestyle. Our space serves as a hub for support, whether that’s through an already curated selection of the safest products, a listening ear from our team while you shop, our digital resources on our website and social media, a connection to an outside resource to address a particular concern, or specialized workshops with experts like you!

And speaking of which, Adrien, I don’t want to reveal all the fantastic tips you’ll be sharing, but can you give us one great piece of advice for fitness at 40?

Adrien: Get Your Sleep! It’s my top strategy for all women, especially as they approach their early forties and perimenopause…So much happens while we sleep. It is the first time our brain goes inward to repair, heal, and prepare us for the next day. During sleep, our bodies perform maintenance on our most vital functions. We reset the immune system. We restore hormonal balance. We clear away waste and neurotoxins. And—we strengthen our bodies and boost our fitness. Best yet, we are less hungry and experience fewer cravings when we get the right amount of sleep.

Why Fitness at 40 Feels Elusive: Strategies to Feel Your Best at Any Age

Are you feeling stressed and stalled? Are your go-to wellness strategies –– a bootcamp, a new detox with a friend, or doubling down on your exercise –– no longer cutting it? It's common for women in their late 30s and early 40s to experience these frustrations, and it's often due to the hormonal changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Join Wellness Coach and Creator of MASTER Menopause NOW!, Adrien Cotton, as we dive into how fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can lead to shifts in metabolism, energy levels, muscle and body composition and overall well-being -- making traditional fitness strategies less effective as your body’s needs and responses are evolving.

In this session, we'll uncover the root causes of your struggles and learn practical, sustainable strategies to manage stress, adjust nutrition, and optimize exercise. Plus - we will learn how to tailor your fitness routine to better align with your changing body so you feel your very best.
