Big Slim Skim

As we continue our Tibi journey, I decided it was time to call in the pros to help explain some of the Tibictionary. Alicia and Ali often grace the pages of Stylebook, and you can catch them in the store shopping for their clients. But when it comes time to shop for themselves, they both tend to gravitate towards Tibi. They are both fans of Tibi founder Amy Smilovic who will be in our store today. I know the spots filled up fast, but you can always pop in and say hi, and if you can't make it in today, the trunk show is going on through the weekend.

I asked Ali to help me with the concept of Big Slim Skin.

Here is the thing about getting dressed. Often times when you look in the mirror and kind of feel well, eh, it isn't because the top is wrong or the shoes are wrong. It is because the proportions are wrong. Getting dressed is about balance. There are many folks that want the all-slim look; I get it. But I think for most of us, when we get dressed in all tight things (think skinny jeans and a fitted top), we don't feel right, and it is because the proportions are off. Most customers I work with want an ease about their look and a comfort. This post from Amy explains it pretty perfectly. She talks about how if she had on shorts with a more revealing top, it would be too much skin for her (and for most of us), but with the pants, it feels more chill and more modern. It has balance.

Ali is the queen of having the right proportions. If you see her in person or on stories and think, "wow, she has the chic look I am looking for, not too preppy, not too sexy, but that I-just-threw-this-on and have that effortlessly cool look." Well, I am here to tell you her secret - she knows how to work with proportions. She is a very tiny person, but she wears oversized things. The reason she doesn't look like Tom Hanks in Big is that she knows how to balance them with the other pieces she is wearing. She knows about Big Slim Skin. I asked her to show us some outfits using Tibi pieces from the trunk show. Of course, now most of them are in her closet.

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
