Closer Than You Think: Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness in Alexandria

Everyone knows the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game — it only takes six or fewer connections to link any actor back to Kevin Bacon. But when it comes to breast cancer, sadly, it often feels like just one degree of separation. Too many of us have been personally affected — whether it’s a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, or close friend.

For me, it started when my mother was diagnosed in her early 40s while I was still in high school. She’s a survivor, thankfully. But not everyone’s story ends that way. My mother-in-law passed away from breast cancer about ten years ago, and the list of friends I’ve watched battle this disease continues to grow. In fact, the very day I was helping with the photo shoot for this event, one of my closest friends called to tell me she would be starting treatment that week. It truly affects us all.

When Anne Altizer approached us about doing an event for The National Breast Center Foundation, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Alexandria is such a close-knit community — I already knew Dr. David Weintritt and his wife, Tara, who founded the organization, and recognized so many familiar names on the board.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a powerful, compassionate organization right here in our city. The foundation’s mission is to expand education and access to care — ensuring women benefit from the latest technology, early detection, and better outcomes. They’ve built a strong network of providers, offer discounted diagnostic services, and continually host events to raise awareness and funding.

You’ve probably seen their pink wings murals around town or attended one of their signature events, from the Think Pink Gala to the Walk to Bust Cancer or the Swing to Bust Cancer tournaments. And if you’ve met their Executive Director, Martha Carucci, you know what a force she is for this cause.

So, what are we doing to help? The Hive teaming up with our upstairs neighbor, Old House Provisions, for a Shop for a Cause night on Thursday, October 16, from 4–7 pm.

Stop by either store, enjoy drinks and treats, and 20% of all sales will be donated to The National Breast Center Foundation. If you can’t make it during the event, we’ll happily honor sales made earlier in the day — just let us know you’re shopping for the cause. Grab some friends and join us as we support this incredible organization and the women it serves.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
