A Graduate’s Guide to Graduation Gifts

Most years in early May, we are lucky enough to have seniors from Episcopal High School do an externship at the stores. I am always impressed by their maturity and work ethic.

This year, however, we didn’t. I admit it slipped my mind until I was at Mind the Mat and Megan introduced us to her interns, Sadie and Evie Jane. Then, of course, they were all over Megan’s social media, and they were so great. I was jealous, of course. They are also always much more savvy than any of us when it comes to Instagram. So I thought maybe I could ask if they could come help me out with a gift guide for graduates.

I mean, who better to pick the gifts than actual graduates?

I love their selections; they covered all price points, so if you just need a little something or if you are really going for it.

A brand that I picked with graduation in mind was Maayaz, so I was thrilled when they added them to their lists. The bracelets are made by hand in Morocco from thread and start at $39, which is great if you just want to take a little something or pair it with a gift card from their school’s local coffee shop. Next up is a trend that keeps going strong: bag charms. We have a great selection from Clare V. If you are looking for clothes, they picked some cute sneakers from Back 70. Let’s face it: the only shoes college students wear are sneakers and maybe cowboy boots. Then, if you want to gift the perfect white tee, there is a great one from AMO. You also can’t go wrong with Krewe sunglasses; everyone loves Krewe.

Then, if you want to go the jewelry route, they selected some great options from Lizzie Fortunato and Jenny Bird. If you really want to go big, we have some great necklaces from Adina Reyter. It was my gift last year for my daughter and a few others. It makes me so happy when I see them wearing it. They are so delicate, and you never have to take them off.

So stop in and pick up some graduation gifts; we have a curated selection from the experts. Congrats, Sadie, on Sewanee and Evie Jane on South Carolina. You are going to have a great four years.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
