NYC Market Roundup

When I tell people I own a store one of the first comments usually is: I would love to go to market with you. As a store owner, it is the most fun part of the job and also the most stressful. Despite the fact that I have been doing this for 24 years now, I still question myself. Also, as the store grows so do the orders. Which is what you want, but sometimes when I place an order my nerves can take over a bit.

One of the people who calms my nerves is my sister, who usually goes with me to New York to keep me straight. She is the one who makes sure I stay in line and don’t order over our budget. This past June she couldn’t make it to market so I took my daughter. She loves NYC and it is the first time I have ever gone to a Broadway or taken the Subway when I was there for work. It was so much fun and I also decided to enlist her to take some photos and help show our readers a little behind the scenes as well.

This market is a smaller one, it is what they call a “transition” delivery. It is the bridge between two seasons. This was the holiday and resort delivery which appears between November and December. It is usually a little window into what will be coming for spring as well.

Since it was a holiday, we of course saw lots of sparkles. We always get a little bit for the party season but not too much. But what else will be hitting our sales floor for this delivery. Well, we saw tons and tons of fringe and lace. Don’t worry, these embellishments are not presented together. But there we found fringe on evening dresses, tops and even on casual sweaters. I, for one, love it.

Then of course sets continue to be everywhere. There were casual sets and dressy sets. One of my favorites was a Veronica Beard long skirt with a matching button-down with tonal appliqué flowers. I know it doesn’t sound like me but I loved it. Ulla Johnson also had my favorite fringe and another big trend, colored denim.

My favorite was Tibi. Since this delivery is always what we have in store for our big December in-store event, I tend to really swing for the fences. I added up my personal order and it was a little scary. They had tech knit pieces that I will live in and then a silk long skirt and matching T-shirt that I could not live without.

This is always my favorite delivery. I think the transition deliveries tend to be more the versatile. Great fabrics that can be worn in different seasons and can easily incorporate into what you already have in your wardrobe. Then there are always a few pieces that are just really special and fit the “had to have” category of your wardrobe.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
