The Hive’s Picks for Tax-Free Weekend

Retailers in Alexandria are always happy to see the calendar switch from July to August. Yes, many people are still on vacation, but there is a slow return to the area as the school year gets closer.

We also kick off August with two great citywide events in Old Town. The first is Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend. It always starts on the first Friday in August, which this year is August 7, and runs all weekend. During this weekend, stores do not have to charge sales tax on clothing, shoes, and school supplies priced under $100.

Now, I’m sure I’m getting some eye rolls since there isn’t much in my store under $100. This time of year, however, there are lots of markdowns, which means we do have great items priced below $100. So you’re getting double the savings—great discounts and no sales tax.

This weekend, however, a group of stores decided it would be fun to go one step further and pay the sales tax for customers in our stores. So even on items over $100, we’re picking up the tab. You might think, "No big deal," but six percent off many of our new arrivals is a great savings.

I encourage everyone to go ahead and grab that Allude cashmere sweater or Veronica Beard wool jacket they’ve been eyeing because six percent can really add up. It’s a back-to-school special you don’t have to be in school to love!

We decided to share some of our favorite new arrivals for fall. We’ve been receiving at least one new shipment a day for the last month. There are great new brands and plenty of pieces you can buy now and wear now.

It’s also a great time to shop the sale racks before the Sidewalk Sale hits next weekend and the bargain hunters descend on Old Town. Get your favorites before they’re gone!

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
