Why I’m Reaching for Sets Over Dresses

I’m not a huge dress person but I love the idea of dresses. The one-and-done ease is appealing, but they just don’t always look great on me.

I tend to wear more sets, and I think the honest reason is because they’re usually more flattering on me. I’m self-conscious about my midsection and chest, so separates tend to do a better job of hiding my flaws. Plus, I love their versatility. While I usually wear them together, when I travel, I love to break up a set, which helps make it easier to just pack a carry-on.

It used to be that sets were reserved for more casual looks—and of course, there are still great casual sets (I live in them). But these days, there are so many great dressy options, especially skirt-and-top combinations. My favorite right now is a set from Tibi. Fair warning: I sized up in the top, so take that into consideration if you feel the need to get one too. The Ulla combo I ordered hasn’t arrived yet, but I placed a personal order and am crossing my fingers it gets here in time for the Gonzaga Gala.

There really are so many great sets at all price points, and for every occasion. Come check out our newest arrivals at The Hive. You don’t want to miss them.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
