Elizabeth’s Top Five Fundamentals For Spring

This weekend, we’re hosting a “Refresh Your Fundamentals” event at The Hive. I realize fundamentals mean different things to different people. We all lead different lives so our wardrobes are different along with our style preferences. However, when it comes to Tibi, their pieces really do work for everyone. Maybe not every piece, but the full collection does. I would find it hard to believe if you couldn’t find something in this collection that works for you.

For example, one of my friends is a partner at a downtown law firm. She has a very different job than mine, but we own many of the same pieces. I also probably dress a little sportier and oversized than she does, while she is more tailored and refined. Yet we both own all the pieces below and wear them on repeat.

It’s all about how you style them. It’s the same with Megan Brown. We could not dress more differently. She is an actual muscle and wears much more fitted clothing than I do; she has more to show off than I do! When she isn’t teaching class at Mind the Mat, she is often giving speeches or presentations. She also needs to look professional (like my lawyer friend) but doesn’t want to not look like herself. She dresses more of what I call “hot tamale.” You would think a line that has a lot of oversized looks wouldn’t be her thing. But once again, it’s all how you wear it. Once a week she texts me a photo wearing one of her two Liam blazers. This is a very oversized blazer but she makes it work while either attending a hockey game or speaking on a panel.

Here are my Top Picks:

  1. My Go To Joggers

When we head to NYC for our buying trips Annette and I (in February Rebecca is coming) have to coordinate what days we are wearing which color of our Tibi joggers. If we don’t, we end up in the same pants most days. I have many colors and fabrics but the two on constant rotation are the navy tropical wool and green crispy nylon. Annette and Rebecca own the same two as well. I have them in silk, nylon, wool and even metallic. They are the greatest pants ever. This delivery we have three colors of the nylon jogger arriving. You may think nylon seems odd as a fabric. Yes, it can make some noise but in a good way. It’s also the perfect 12 month fabric. The navy and dune are in a shiny nylon which makes it easier to dress up and the crispy nylon is in a great neutral. If you do not like wearing shorts these are the perfect option for summer time. I wear my white ones all the time. I can’t wait to add the tan to my collection. If it’s really cold out I just layer a legging under my black nylon joggers. But it has to be really cold. Most days the nylon really is perfect.

  2. A Great Blazer

Everyone needs a good black or navy blazer. You probably need two. One fitted and one a little more oversized. The reason is that dressing is all about proportion. To balance out the other pieces in your outfit you need to have an outside layer that can add ease and one that can add structure. These two are really the only ones you need (okay a dropped jacket is a great addition as well) and once again, the tropical wool fabric is perfect for all seasons. I know, you are asking yourself: wool in summer? Yes, that is why the word tropical is in there. It is the perfect weight. We all know that in the summer the air conditioning is cranked up, and you need a blazer indoors at most offices or even restaurants.

  3. Perfect Tees

I am always looking for great t-shirts. I hate when they are too sheer of a fabric or have that saggy stretching out neckline that looks sloppy. I want a t-shirt that I could wear dressier if I want to, and that’s all based on the material. The Tibi t-shirts check all the boxes and they have the best colors. Yes, we all need black and white but I often find myself needing that non-color color. The greenish blue that you can’t really decide which one it is. These are the colors that go with everything. Think about it, a white t-shirt makes everything casual. If you want to dress up a blazer but still wear a t-shirt you want a color. It instantly makes an outfit more pulled together.

  4. Dressy Sweatshirts

Oh how I love a dress sweatshirt. I have stacks and stacks of them. Some with hoods, some made of silk and all the options in between. Most of them are by Tibi and once again they can look like a “sweatshirt” when worn with a casual vibe but you can easily pair them with a Stella pant or skirt to dress up the sweatshirt for the casual ease we all love.

  5. Skirts

Just like the nylon joggers, Tibi has perfected skirts in nylon. We decided to add some color to this delivery with a red pull-on skirt. Red seems to be having a moment. This pull-on skirt is really like a pair of joggers or you can view it the same way. The perfect vacation piece as well if you are heading somewhere warm this winter. Wear it with flip-flops or sneakers walking around exploring or add a nice sandal for dinner and you are set. The balloon skirt is just as great, and in dune, it can be worn 12 months out of the year.

Join us this Thursday through Sunday to try on for yourself and refresh your fundamentals:

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
