You Need To Meet Liam

I remember when my kids were little, and they would scream or mumble (well, the mumbling still happens with teenagers), and I would say, "Use your words" to get them to tell me what they needed. Sometimes I feel like that when it comes to fashion. It is sometimes hard to find the words you need to communicate how you feel or want to feel when you get dressed. Often, people use words like "bohemian" or "preppy" to describe their style, but that isn't really how anyone dresses, in my view. Dressing is not a "look," it is about the feeling you get when you put on the clothes. I never look at someone and say, "Gosh, I love her preppy vibe." Instead, I am drawn to someone's style, and it is usually more about them looking effortless than anything else.

Once again, it took the owner of Tibi to explain it to me. The way she describes her own style and the amazing brand she has created that helps women look and feel great is: "The Creative Pragmatist"

This, I get. It is exactly what I want from my clothes. She also talks about how often when you get dressed, and it doesn't feel quite right, it isn't about a particular item; it is about the portions. She solves these dressing problems with BIG, Slim, Skin. She advises us to balance something with volume and get the proper proportions.

So many customers have told me they can't wear an oversized blazer. They either think it makes them look too big, or they are petite, and it overwhelms them. I get that they are too old for us, sometimes. I am not saying it is for everyone, and it took me time to get there. But if you are going to try one, you should try the Liam. I asked Alicia, Angelica, Madeline, and Lacey to show us how they would wear the Liam. They are all different ages (20s, 30s, and 50s), have very different styles, different daily lives, and body types, yet it still looks amazing on everyone. You will note simple things like pushing up sleeves, tucking in a sweater, or switching to a lighter shoe can help make the look seem polished. Sometimes it is the little things that make it all work.

This week we are still hosting our Fundamentals Trunk Show with Tibi, and all the looks here are from the collection. If you need help styling, we are here to help. We want to make sure you wear the pieces you buy from us and feel great when you do.

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
