Dumbbells, Kettlebells, or Barbells: What’s Best for Your Body?

Walk into any gym or scroll through five minutes of fitness content online and you're instantly confronted with choices. Dumbbells here, kettlebells there, a barbell rack in the corner, and someone in the back swinging what looks like a bag of sand….?

Maybe you've been strength training for a while and you're ready to invest in some equipment for your home gym. Maybe you're just getting started and have no idea where to begin. Or maybe you've been doing the same routine for months and suspect there's something better out there, but you just don't know what.

I’m here to provide some clarity and encouragement.

There is a right answer for you, based on where you are, what your body needs, and what will actually make you want to show up. And after 20 years in this industry, I’ve gotten pretty good at helping our community find it.

Before going into each of  these pieces of equipment, let's talk about why any of this even matters in the first place.

Why Your Body Needs Resistance

Your muscles, bones, and connective tissue all need a force to push against in order to stay strong, resilient, and functional, especially in midlife.

Our bodies are designed to work against resistance. Without that stimulus, we lose muscle mass, bone density, and the ability to move confidently, even for simple tasks like walking the dog, picking up groceries, or just getting out of bed in the morning!

Clearly, this isn’t about aesthetics anymore. This is about longevity, strength, and feeling good every single day for the rest of our (long) lives.

Lifting heavy can sometimes get a bad rap. People might think it’s cost prohibitive, outdated, intimidating, even. But lifting heavy is none of these things, and with a few key resources I’m hoping you’ll find something that feels good for you and can empower you to start lifting heavy on a more regular basis!

What is heavy? You can define this! It may be your own bodyweight!

Let’s break it down to the most common types of weights, and weigh (pun intended!) which ones might be best for your journey.

Dumbbells: The Most Accessible Starting Point

If you’re just getting started, dumbbells are almost always my first recommendation. They are highly accessible, can be found at any large retailer and most everyone knows what they are.

They’re versatile, approachable, and relatively affordable. You can get a solid set for under $100. Dumbbells allow you to train both sides of your body evenly, which is incredibly important for balance and injury prevention.

And I know how much that low barrier to entry can matter when you’re starting…or re-starting…any type of training regimen.

If you’re in the mindset that the best tool is the one you’ll actually use, go for the dumbbells!

Dumbbells are designed for ease. The grip is meant to be easy to pick up, and a variety of styles will help you choose which feels easiest.  They are also by-far the most purchased piece of equipment.

Kettlebells: Where Strength Meets Skill

Kettlebells are a different experience entirely.

Kettlebells are uniquely bottom-heavy and challenge our stability, coordination, and grip strength in a way that dumbbells don’t.

The best brands are NOT designed for ease. In fact, on the contrary. The rougher and larger the grip, the more challenging - and I contend - better for your long term results and fitness.

They move differently, feel different, and require more intention.

This last point – intention – is exactly where the special benefit comes, along with a bit of caution.

Kettlebell training can be incredibly effective, but it does require proper guidance. This is not something you want to “figure out” on your own with online videos.

When used correctly, kettlebells build powerful, functional strength. When used incorrectly, they can lead to injury and frustration.

So if you’re drawn to a mental challenge as well as a physical one, I suggest you pick up some kettlebells. Though remember, learn first from a certified instructor…like yours truly!

Barbells: Powerful, But Less Functional

Barbells are often seen as the gold standard in strength training, the classic weight implement of the good ol’ 80s strength gyms. And yes, they are as powerful as they are empowering. I do love myself a killer Barbell Clean!

Barbells allow you to lift heavier loads and build significant strength.

But here’s something that might surprise you: they’re not always the most functional tool for everyday movement.

Because a barbell locks both sides of your body into one fixed position, it doesn’t allow for the same natural movement patterns that dumbbells or kettlebells do. The actual shape of the straight bar “helps” you because you can compensate with one side over the other without realizing it. With use of the Dumbbell or Kettlebell, no compensating allowed!

That said… there is something undeniably empowering about lifting a barbell. You feel strong. You look strong. You get those bragging rights. The Barbell Deadlift and the Barbell Squat (Back or Front Squat) are two of my favorites. Yet, like the Kettlebell, proceed with caution and with a certified instructor.

If motivation matters, if a challenge is what you’re up for, or if you’re ready to move onto the next level of your strength training, go for gold, go with the barbell!

Sandbags: The Most Real-Life Strength You Can Build

Bonus! There’s another weight implement that is often overlooked, if not forgotten entirely!

If I had to choose the most functional tool of all, it might just be the sandbag.

Why?

Unlike every other tool, the weight inside a sandbag shifts as you move it. That means your body has to constantly adjust, stabilize, and respond in real time, just like it does in everyday life.

Carrying groceries. Lifting a suitcase. Picking something up (wiggly, squirmy grandkids, maybe…?) off the floor.

It’s unpredictable, which is what makes it so effective.

Sandbags are also incredible for grip strength, which is one of the most important (and often overlooked) indicators of overall health and longevity.

Sandbags require quite a bit of intention, creativity, and also knowledge, but they are one of the most powerful tools you can incorporate into your routine.

So… Which One Should You Choose?

Here's my honest answer: the best tool is the one that makes you want to show up. As yourself, are you:

  • Just starting out? Begin with dumbbells. Low barrier, high reward.

  • Craving a mental challenge alongside the physical one? Explore kettlebells (with proper guidance).

  • Ready to lift heavier and feel seriously powerful? Add a barbell.

  • Want to train the way your body actually moves in real life? Try a sandbag.

And here's another piece of advice I give every woman who walks through my door, regardless of which tool she picks up first:

What I don't want for you is another trip down the rabbit hole of finding the perfect program before you start.

The weights that will get you to lift heavy, as consistently as possible, as confidently as you can be – those are the ones you should pick up.

If you're still not sure where to begin, or want to make sure you're using any of these tools safely and effectively, I welcome you to join our weekly small group strength sessions at my studio in Alexandria, where we regularly train with all sorts of heavy equipment to keep you challenged and feeling good.
