Beat Hot Flashes with Your Beach Bag Essentials
Summer is here and it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather – walks filled with sunshine, dips in the pool or ocean, and the joy of occasional days without an agenda. For women experiencing perimenopause or menopause, the heat can trigger not-so-blissful hot flashes, turning that beach dream into a sweaty nightmare. Don't let hot flashes steal your sunshine! By packing some smart essentials in your beach bag, you can transform a potentially uncomfortable outing into a day of pure relaxation.
Refillable Water Bottle
Let's start with the most basic, yet crucial element: hydration. Hot flashes can leave you feeling dehydrated, so staying ahead of the curve is key. Invest in a high-quality, reusable water bottle that keeps your water icy cold for hours. Opt for a bottle with a large capacity, so you don't have to constantly refill it. Aim to sip on cool water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Here are bonus tips: freeze your water bottle partially before you head out AND add some electrolytes to your water. As the bottle thaws, you'll have a continuous supply of refreshing coolness. And frankly I think most of us - I am - are dehydrated, so I always add electrolytes to mine. LMNT is a good brand, and I also like Xtend BCAA with electrolytes to support my workouts.
Spray Bottle
A refillable spray bottle can become your beach bag's MVP. Fill it with cool water and a few drops of a refreshing essential oil like peppermint or lavender. When a hot flash hits, give yourself a quick spritz on your face, neck, and wrists. The cool mist will instantly lower your skin temperature, providing much-needed relief. Plus, the essential oils can add a calming and invigorating touch. Pro tip: Keep your spray bottle in a cooler compartment of your beach bag for an extra chill factor.
Cooling Towels
Cooling towels are another beach bag essential that offers dual benefits. Look for towels made from a microfiber material that activates when dampened. Simply soak the towel in cool water, wring out the excess, and drape it over your neck or forehead. The cool, damp fabric will work wonders in bringing down your body temperature during a hot flash. Here's the other side of the coin: cooling towels can also double up as a makeshift shade provider. Drape the damp towel over your head or lap for a touch of portable shade when you need a break from the direct sun.
Breathable Clothing
What you wear to the beach can significantly impact how comfortable you feel. Opt for loose-fitting clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Avoid tight-fitting clothes or anything made from synthetic materials that trap heat. Consider packing a lightweight cover-up for additional sun protection and to shield yourself from the midday sun's peak intensity. Look for clothes in light, breezy colors that reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it.
Frozen Treats
While you might be avoiding sugary drinks, there's no harm in indulging in a cool, refreshing treat. Pack a small, reusable ice pack in your cooler bag. You can use it to keep your drinks and snacks chilled, but it can also do double duty as a personal cooling pad. When a hot flash hits, simply wrap the ice pack in a thin towel and press it against your pulse points, like your wrists or neck, for a quick burst of coolness.
Hats with Built-in Cooling Mechanisms
Sun protection is non-negotiable at the beach, but some hats can trap heat and exacerbate hot flashes. Look for hats made from breathable materials like straw or cotton. Opt for hats with wide brims that provide ample shade for your face, neck, and shoulders. Some hats even come with built-in cooling mechanisms. These hats feature sweat-wicking materials or hidden compartments where you can insert ice packs for a continuous cooling effect.
Portable Mini Fan
For on-the-go cooling, consider packing a small, portable fan. Battery-operated or USB-chargeable options are readily available and can provide a much-needed blast of cool air during a hot flash. Look for a fan with multiple speed settings so you can adjust the airflow to your preference.
Take a DIP!
If you are at the pool or ocean, opt for a splash in the water!
Bonus Tip: Pack a Small Handheld Mirror
While not directly related to hot flashes, a small handheld mirror can be a lifesaver at the beach. Hot flashes can sometimes cause a flushed appearance. Having a mirror handy allows you to check on your makeup and freshen up if needed.
By incorporating these beach bag essentials into your summer routine, you can transform a potentially uncomfortable beach trip into a day of pure relaxation and enjoyment. Remember, with a little preparation and the right tools, you can embrace the sunshine and conquer hot flashes.
