End Your Summer With a Re-Set

1. Start With Summer Items That Have Seen Better Days

Begin your September reset by taking a look at the items that spent the most time outdoors. Think things like pool inflatables with slow leaks, torn beach chairs, and sun-bleached towels. End of season is the right time to look at what actually held up and what didn’t. If it’s not going to be worth pulling out next May, let it go now while you still have the mental energy to make the call.

2. Check Expiration Dates

Take the time to check the dates on sunscreen, bug spray, summer snacks, and medicine. Make a list of what you'll need to purchase next spring so you're not caught by surprise!

3. Edit Your Closets and Linen Cabinets Before Fall

Before fall takes hold of your wardrobe, make room by editing down your summer pieces. Look for worn-out sandals, swimwear that isn’t holding its shape, and any old accessories you didn’t use this year—then donate or consign them.

Then, turn your attention to your linen closet. The summer heat and frequent washing are hard on sheets in particular, so it’s best to evaluate everything in August to see how things are holding up.

If you have more bedding than you need or use, consider donating clean, gently used linens to those who need them. Thrift stores and animal shelters are always a good bet!
