Women Making History, Right Here In Alexandria

This month, history is all about her story. From the all-women flyover during the Superbowl to women winning big at the Grammy’s, women are getting much-deserved recognition. Today, we are celebrating Women’s Day by featuring four women who are making history right here in Alexandria. And, if you’re looking for ways to participate in the celebration of women’s history, check out this event guide from the Washingtonian.

Elizabeth: We have a woman in Alexandria making history: Nicole Jones, owner of Stomping Ground, Mae’s Market, and her newest addition Virginia’s Darling. All you have to do is read this Washington Post review and you will know how fortunate we are to have her in our town. I mean, just read the review; it says it all, and it’s glowing in a way you just don’t see from tough restaurant critics. I am no foodie, but I know what she does is special. And her genius goes beyond the food – it is the places she creates. They provide a sense of community and an experience. The spaces are beautiful but welcoming and the people who work for her are amazing. I have been to Virginia’s Darling a few times and every time you leave with a smile on your face. Okay, maybe it is because I have had a few cocktails, but I think there’s something innately awesome about it. Maybe it’s more than the food or the decor – amazing as they are - maybe it’s because you always see someone you know and you always have a good time. Check out Virginia’s Darling, but after this great review know you won’t be alone.

Dr. Shara: I am often in awe of the women I meet in this area. They are strong, assertive, intelligent, and capable. For Women’s History Month, I wanted to uplift one woman in particular, who I feel is making history by empowering our children, Joy Whitlow Nash. Joy has over 20 years of experience as a comptroller and CFO for several non-profits. Throughout her career, she reflected on how she gave so much to her job and knew the only road to satisfaction and the feeling of appreciation would come from starting a business. She knew she wanted to do something with children, so she began the brainstorming process and after some time landed on opening a Montessori school. It took her about 3.5 years to get the school off the ground, but she did it. Montessori Kids Universe Cameron Square opened last June with 75 students and 22 employees. So, here’s where her ethos and professional career infuse in a way that I think is history-making. The whole idea of a Montessori is to give our children autonomy in learning by encouraging curiosity and exploration. She is shaping and empowering young minds and the concept of empowerment carries through in her leadership style. When speaking with Joy you can hear her passion for what she is doing. I asked her how she does it all and she simply replied, “with a great team.” I think about the future and the autonomy she is giving people around her and I can’t help but think she is leaving such an amazing legacy.

Katelin: Rachel Van Wormer is an Immigration attorney with a great heart who gives pro-bono time. In her spare time, she is a master gardener, planting all sorts of interesting plants, foraging for cool local fruits and vegetables, while raising two incredibly cool and well-rounded children. Rachel is part of a line of incredibly strong women who raise strong talented women, and I am excited to see what the next generation turns out to be like. She makes history quietly behind the scenes helping people and families every day to be in this country and to be able to live their best life and thrive.

Adrien: I am in awe of my dear friend, Regina Schofield, who is changing the world. She has been making history for over twenty years in both a professional and personal capacity. Currently, she directs Battelle's philanthropic engagement across the country by supporting STEM programming at the local, state, and regional levels. Personally, she is an avid volunteer, a fearless leader, and the woman who I'd want by my side in any endeavor. Her strength is complimented by fairness, she is as kind as she is tough, and she lives her values, which is a true testament to her exceptional personality and approach to life.
