At-Home Masks: A Luxury You Can Afford

A professional facial is one of life’s greatest luxuries. You walk out with clean, clear, dewy, plumped skin, and vow, “I am going to do this more often!” But of course, life (and your wallet) can get in the way of a weekly or even monthly facial. Fortunately, there are some excellent facial masks you can use at home that are a good, if not better, alternative to what you get in the salon. And, of course, much more convenient! The iconic image of a woman with her head wrapped in a towel and a white ghost-like mask covering everything but her eyes is what we used to associate with a mask, but, today’s masks are targeted to all different skin types, problems, and goals. There are products for morning use, nighttime application, moisturizing, tightening...the list goes on and on. The key is finding the mask that’s right for you, and using it. Religiously. Don’t think of it as something you do every once in a while when you want to treat yourself. Consider it a regular part of your skincare regimen. The Fresh Rose Face Mask is a great example of the amazing hydrating masks on the market. If you have dry, dull looking skin this mask is a game-changer. It will brighten lackluster complexions and boost radiance. And, it is infused with rosewater, cucumber extract, and aloe vera gel, the holy grail of skin soothing. Incorporate this into your nightly routine two to three nights a week. After cleansing, smooth a thin layer over your face, avoiding the eyes. Leave on for 20 minutes and then rinse. If you are into instant gratification, you will not be disappointed with your skin’s newfound radiance. The re-hydrating properties of the natural minerals work in tandem with antioxidant-rich green tea to naturally produce a dewy glow. For oily or acne-prone skin, there are several miracle-working masks out there. My favorite for people with this type of skin is the Dr. Dennis Gross Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask. This mask helps minimize the size of pores and the formulation includes 5-percent colloidal sulfur, which will also absorb acne-causing oil. Use this product all over or just in your problem areas for 10 minutes, 2-3 times a week. If you are having a bad breakout, you can even sleep with it on and rinse off in the morning. It’s a great way to calm skin down and leave you with a bright, clear complexion. What I love about the concept of the mask is that you can target problem areas with special product formulations. The Patchology line is a leader in tissue masks, and their Firm Masque is one of my favorite specialty masks. This is like a nectar for the often overlooked neck area. Peptides tighten the skin and help to restore its natural collagen production, improve elasticity, and stimulate cellular renewal. The hyaluronic acid provides intense moisture and the soy protein and aronia arbutifolia work together to improve the appearance of dullness and the loss of skin density that comes with age.Imagine having that post-facial euphoria without visiting a professional salon. These at-home masks will not only give your skin a brighter, fresher look, but you’ll be treating yourself and your skin.
