Nicholson and Nicholson at The Hive

I often look to everyone who works with me at the store for advice on new brands to carry or what to pick from the brands we already have. We all equally love clothes, so when Angelica texts me about a brand, I listen. She had been on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, last year and bought the cutest jacket from a local boutique. The brand was Nicholson & Nicholson.

I put it on my list for the next time I went to market. Luckily, I was going to a show called Designers & Agents that features smaller brands. It just so happened Nicholson & Nicholson was showing there, so I figured it was meant to be. I rarely go to an actual show, so it all felt serendipitous—and once I found them, I even knew the woman who was working with the line. It really felt meant to be. It was a small collection, which made me happy, and it doesn’t have a huge footprint in the U.S., which also made me happy. We love discovering great things our clients may never have seen.

Once I started looking at the clothing on the racks, I knew Angelica was right—we needed this line. The fabrics were amazing, and the styles were simple and tailored. I thought it would work perfectly for D.C. in the spring and summer. Oftentimes, customers want a bit of a sleeve or something they can wear to work in the warmer months, and these pieces fit that need perfectly. My favorite is the Ray top and matching Mira skirt. It’s a great shade of blue, made from a light fabric, and the crinkle adds the perfect amount of texture.

I also need to add the sweatshirt and sweatpants to my collection—that’s what I’m calling it now, since I have so many track sets and sweatsuits.

The one thing that is different about the brand is the sizing. It only comes in three sizes—36, 38, and 40—which translate loosely to small, medium, and large. All the pieces are cut to have a slightly oversized feel. So far, the reaction has been great. Come in and check out our newest addition to the shelves, along with all the latest spring arrivals.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
